Friday's Featured Fly

Stillwater simplicity… Solitude’s Hale Bopp Leech!  Don’t head to your favorite lake without a fistful!

RIO's Webster Tactical Crab sure has a bunch of thought behind it.  Originally intended for East Coast Striper's, this one has plenty of other applications in warmer, salty climates.  The engineering is in the keel....a series of Tungsten beads that get the fly down and click when the fly is stripped.  Call 'em in!

The high water of spring means it's time to go big!  As the rivers start to warm, larger stonefly nymphs start to get wiggly.  This happens weeks ahead of their actual emergence.  A big and heavy stonefly, like Solitude's Tungsten Trout Retriever, is a great point fly in a double-nymph rig.  Trail something smaller behind it and wait for your indicator to go down!

REVIEW: THE NEW - FISHPOND STORMSHADOW CHEST PACK

Callum's, dialed Fishpond StormShadow Chest Pack! Goals! (photo Callum Brock)

I'm willing to bet most anglers today don't fish utilizing a fishing vest anymore.  I can say this because of a couple of reasons, one, the lack of sales on fishing vest and two, the lack of seeing folks on the rivers wearing fishing vest.  This is not to say that no one uses fishing vest anymore, it's just not as common as it used to be.  Today, more and more anglers are utilizing hip packs, chest packs, sling packs or backpacks. Gone are the days where everyone utilized a fishing vest.

This is especially true when it comes to the spey fisherman.  In general, two handed anglers, including myself just don't like having anything in their chest area that would interfere with the spey cast.  In addition to that, I've become more of a minimalist when it comes to fishing with a two handed rod for steelhead and trout.  I like the freedom of carrying only what I need while I'm actually fishing.  Today, I never carry gear that I might use only a couple of times a year on my person while fishing.  I will have a bag in my boat or truck that will hold that once or twice used item and when I need it, it's there.
Review: "Perfect size for all of your on the water essentials. This is the first chest pack that isn't too big that it gets in the way, yet holds plenty of essentials. This pack has been a great addition this winter steelhead season, but I see a lot of potential for summer steelhead and trout season." - Callum Brock, Gorge Fly Shop.
HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED!
With that said, the new Fishpond Stormshadow Chest Pack is seriously messing with my train of thought.  It's sleekness and secure fit are very attractive to me.  My program is basically that I fish with a two handed rod 95% of the time, spey, switch or trout spey.  For each two handed rod I own, I've put together a labeled one gallon Ziplock bag with all the heads and tips for each rod.

I wear zippered waders so pocket space is somewhat limited so this Ziplock bag is usually stuffed just down inside my waders, above the belt and between the waders and my coat or shirt along with one or two fly boxes as well.  This gives me easy access to them when needed.  But when I have to unzip my waders to relieve myself, I forget sometimes that the bag and fly boxes are there and they fall to the ground.  Admittedly, this gets annoying.  I'll have my cell phone in a smaller sandwich sized Ziplock bag and that will be stuffed in one of the side chest wader pockets that's not waterproof.  I think you know where I'm headed with this...

PROBLEMS ARE BEING SOLVED HERE!
The problem with the Ziplock bag and fly boxes falling to the ground = Solved, with either the waterproof pocket or the hand warming pocket!  The problem with my waders fitting much tighter because of the bag and boxes in between my waders and shirt or coat = Solved, because I no longer have to stuff the items into my waders!  The problem of having my cell phone in a Ziplock bag and then putting it in a non-waterproof pocket = Solved, with the waterproof pocket!

My initial thought was there'd also be a problem having a chest pack like the Fishpond Stormshadow Chest Pack over the top of my zippered waders. However, the zipper on my waders is easily accessible to unzip.  You can release one or both of the side front clasps and access the zipper that way.  If you wear the chest pack somewhat loose, you can simply reach in or up and grab the zipper.  Either way, you can still keep the pack on to relieve yourself, that is as long as you are going #1 and not #2 obviously.  If you choose to take the pack off to relieve yourself, that's cool too.  All your essentials will be in one easy to pick up and put back on pack.

ACCESSORIES
Fishpond has done an excellent job in creating numerous accessories for their packs so much so that any angler could completely outfit any Fishpond pack to fit their needs.  This alone sets them apart from other companies that produce fishing packs.

Review: Fishpond Stormshadow Chest Pack - "Arrived swiftly to New Zealand, awesome service from Gorge Fly Shop!!! The chest is just the perfect size, light super functional. I just add a Velcro patch on the front pocket over the logo (sorry for hiding it) to add a C&F Design fly patch medium size. I have now plenty of flies. Also fit my Thunderhead Submersible Backpack just a great option." - Jean-Michel on 12/2024
LAST CAST
I really, really like the fact that I can marry this pack to my Thunderhead Submersible Backpack, and have maximum room to carry what I need for a day or multi day trip.  I really like the thought of summer steelhead fishing, and wet wading using the Stormshadow Chest Pack alone, it just has me excited about summer.  A minimalistic designed but functionally appropriate totally customizable chest pack that is not overbearing.  It will be a perfect addition to your fishing inventory!

Hope this was helpful, thanks for reading!

Columbia Gorge Fishing Reports - April 24, 2025

Stillwater Trout

We are fortunate to have so much access to stillwater trout fishing here in the Northwest and we're happy to report that it is game-on for the '25 season!  Some of the Mt. Hood lakes opened to fishing 4/22 and things are off to a great start.  Water temps are spring cold but notably warmer than they were at this time last year.  Slow presentations have been drawing the most attention.  Wind drifting with a balance leech under an indicator produced the best results.  A split shot 3-4 feet above the fly to hold depth was very helpful.  The bites, especially later in the day, were rather aggressive, but they seemed to want everything to be slow.  Hovering the boat and barely moving with the wind was the ticket.  Row trolling leeches on an intermediate line worked, too, but did not seem be quite as productive.  That bite should gain a lot of steam in the very near future as things warm up.

On the bug front, chironomids are present in good numbers and Callibaetis are right around the corner.  The pesky wind was impacting the surface fishing the last few days, but there were a few brief periods of evening glass.  The windows were narrow, but the trout started looking up as soon as the wind went away.  Ample chironomids on the water had plenty of fish rising and they were not fly-selective in the least bit.  If you could get your bug near the rise quickly, they ate it....and it didn't seem to matter what it was.  A size 16 parachute with a darker body worked just fine.  They will progressively get a little more selective as time wears on and the pressure increases, but there's a great window here for a while.  Consider the fish hungry and willing!

Deschutes Trout

We've been fielding a lot of phone calls regarding the trout fishing on the Deschutes as of late.  After a lengthy period of high water, the river is back down to a comfortable level for people to wade.  The water is warming up and things are shaping up for everyone's favorite time....stonefly season!  Something worth mentioning is how good the fishing is in the few weeks leading up to the hatch.  It can be outstanding and something that really adds to the experience is that it's not slammed busy on the river.  No, you will not have a bunch of fish attacking giant dry flies, but the stonefly nymphs are very active leading up to their transition to adulthood.  The water is warmer than its been in months and the trout are happily feeding. If you're itchy to go, don't wait...go now!  The weather is spectacular and there is a lot of wildlife to see. There's always a lot to love about being in the Deschutes Canyon, but seeing it before everything is brown again is pretty special.

SafeSpace - April is Child Abuse Awareness Month

Gorge Fly Shop has been supporting SafeSpace for over six years.  The toy drive during the Holiday Season and donations of fly fishing gear for summer auctions.  Gorge Fly Shop's goal is to bring awareness and support for SafeSpace.  Gorge Fly Shop's Community of anglers from all over has supported SafeSpace.   We support SafeSpace because we believe in the work that they do for the children in our communities.

Over the past six years, Gorge Fly Shop and our community of fly anglers have donated well over ten thousand dollars worth of money and donations.  The support from our angling community over the years has been very touching and heartfelt.

Last year, we changed our Toy drive by asking our angling community to help "Build a Backpack".  This idea came to life as we learned that children often come to Safespace, leaving a situation that is not safe, and are placed into a safer living situation.

These backpacks provided more than just the contents inside.  Providing children with a sense of security, ownership, and comfort.  Our friend Terry learned about the need for backpacks and took it upon himself to build and donate backpacks.  He filled each backpack with personal care items shampoo, combs, water bottles, deodorant, plus comfort items like blankets and stuffed animals.  SafeSpace staff shared with us just how much these backpacks meant to each child who received one.  We decided our goal for the Toy Drive for 2024 would be to build backpacks so that each child would receive one.

Terry and Lyndsey worked together creating SafeSpace Closet after finding out how great the need is for clean clothing.

In March 2025, Lyndsey Duddles was elected to the SafeSpace board.  She is excited to join SafeSpace, having a greater role in supporting SafeSpace and her community.  Terry also joined the board in February 2025, with his extensive skills in accounting for nonprofits, they were beyond happy to have his support.

Gorge Fly Shop would like to extend its sincerest gratitude to the angling community for their support of SafeSpace.

If you would like to learn more about SafeSpace and how you can support them, feel free to reach out to us or them directly.

Columbia Gorge Fishing Reports - March 28, 2025

Winter Steelhead

Sad to say, but we are getting to be on borrowed time for winter fish.  Call it another couple weeks, or so, remaining.  The good news is that the tail end of the season can yield some of the best fishing and the most enjoyable weather!  Water temps are on the rise and that's always a good thing for those that like to swing a fly.  It's getting close to "now or never" time for the fish with the final pushes on their way.  Though there are definitely spawned out fish dropping back, there will still be opportunities for chrome-bright fish out there.  All this said, if you're thinking about trying for one more winter fish, go soon!

Deschutes Trout

Wish there was a hot Deschutes report, but we're on a bit of a holding pattern there.  All the rain in the past few weeks accompanied by a little heat has the Deschutes running rather high with color for the foreseeable future.  This isn't an uncommon situation for this time of year, and it's definitely a good thing.  Hopefully the elevated flows will wash out some of the silt and debris that's gathered from last season.  If you give it a shot, focus your efforts on whatever soft water near the bank you can find.  And be careful!  It's high and very pushy.  A lot of the water fish are in right now will not even require stepping off the bank.

Fishing aside, this is such a spectacular time to see the Deschutes Canyon.  Early spring is very much in your face out there right now.  There's green grass and plenty of happy wildlife to see.  You're guaranteed to have a great deal of success out there with binoculars and a camera.  A fly rod....not so much for the time being.  Fishing should be very good in a few weeks when the flows drop.
