Howell's River Rat Squid

December 2009 Fly of the Month
Guide Scott Howell’s River Rat Squid is deadly on early winter steelhead.  By design, the fly creates an amazing presence in the water.  It’s an un-weighted bug making it perfect for swinging soft flats and tail-outs.  If you want to get the fly down in faster water, consider sliding a cone-head on your tippet or add a split-shot.  The stinger design assures even the lightest grabbing feel will find the iron.

We love the pink & orange for early season fish, especially on bright days in stained water.  If the water is clear and the sun is shining, consider going to the black & wine.  For over-cast conditions in any water clarity, you can’t beat the black & blue.
